How Dry Needling Works

person with acupuncture needles in skinOur professional dry needling treatment uses extremely thin needles inserted into trigger points to create mechanical stimulation of muscle tissue. This process releases healing growth factors, increases blood flow to problem areas, and provides a neurological reset for proper muscle function. The result? Reduced pain, improved mobility, and faster recovery for many of our patients. Our needles are so thin that the majority of people tell us they barely feel them and look forward to the results that they experience.

Conditions We Successfully Treat

Dry needling can be remarkably effective for numerous conditions, including sciatica pain, persistent muscle spasms, tendonitis, and chronic inflammation. We’ve seen excellent results treating tension headaches, chronic neck and shoulder pain, athletic shin splints, post-surgical scar tissue, and various sports injuries. Dr. Carroll customizes each treatment plan to your specific needs and concerns, ensuring you receive exactly the care you need.

Your Patient Experience

We understand you might have questions about what to expect during treatment. Most patients experience minimal pain during needle insertion with potential mild discomfort at trigger points—this is actually good, as it means we’ve found the problem area! You may notice some temporary muscle soreness similar to what you’d feel after a deep tissue massage, along with increased range of motion, often immediately. There might be possible mild bruising that resolves quickly. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the procedure is and how quickly they experience relief.

Treatment Considerations

Your healing journey with dry needling typically begins with 1-5 sessions. Based on your specific condition, more treatments may be necessary for optimal results, which is why we offer personalized treatment plans. We offer comprehensive care that may include chiropractic adjustments, massage, or other modalities to further enhance your results. While most people are excellent candidates for dry needling, we don’t recommend it for:

  • People currently on blood thinners
  • Active cancer patients
  • Pregnant women (without prior medical clearance)

Overcoming Needle Anxiety

Many of our patients initially express concern about needles. Rest assured, the needles used in dry needling are extremely small—much thinner than those used for injections—and are barely felt upon insertion. Even patients with significant needle phobias often find the treatment very manageable when they understand the process and experience the potential for significant pain relief. Our caring team will ensure you’re comfortable every step of the way.
